Fashion and Fun Raises Charitable Cash

Marco Island Woman's Club Stages 19th Major Fundraiser

If you’d walked into Hideaway Beach Club during this particular fashion show, you’d be forgiven for being unable to distinguish the models from 200 women watching.

The occasion was the Marco Island Woman’s Club’s 19th show, and the women were as beautifully dressed as the 10 models showcasing outfits from Patchington, Kay’s On The Beach and the Hideaway Beach Pro Shop.

Sure, it was a gala gathering where they also dined on filet mignon, mashed potato and julienned vegetables – followed by fruit tarts with dollops of cream – but beneath all the glitz and fun it was all about business.

All about the business, that is, of bringing in money to help deserving young Marco students with their college tuition costs, as well as helping a host of other non-profits – such as Veteran’s Community Park, the Greater Marco Family YMCA, the Marco Healthcare Center and the Marco Island Historical Society – with their expenses.

Club president Christine Koppel summed up this true sense of giving back to the community in her invocation by observing, “All the love that you put forward each day will return to you multiplied.”

That echoes the club’s motto: “Why you were born and why you are living depends what you are getting out of this world, and what you are giving.”

Membership at the moment for club, established in 1966 by a single woman, hence the singular reference in its name, is around 200. But, said publicity, web and entertainment chair Debbie Roddy, “We can always use new members.”

Kathein Jewelers of Marco joined forces with the show this year, accessorizing some of the models as well as pledging 25 percent of sales on the day to the club.

A raffle featuring dozens of options like gourmet wine baskets, restaurant vouchers and spa services, along with a silent auction offering paintings, jewelry and a season trial membership for the Marco Island Yacht Club, helped swell the charitable coffers even more.

Members meet the first Wednesday of the month, October through May, at 11:30 AM at the Marco Island Yacht Club. For more information contact Christine Koppel, President, at 856-906-4319 or go to the “Contact Us” page to send a message. Visit the website at marcowomansclub.com.
