As dedicated readers of my column already know, I’m taking a quasi summer hiatus from Art Uncovered – but there’s still news just itching to be shared. Besides, I wouldn’t want you to forget me!
Things are always changing, always shifting, and always happening, at Marco’s own Artist Colony. Rightside Studio and the Artist Colony at the Esplanade welcome newest member Nancy Dowdall, photographer.
Dowdall, a professional for over 20 years, is well known locally as a fine art photographer, but the artist considers her portrait and commercial photography as nothing less than art. Dowdall shies away from the typically static poses that constitute so many portraits, and instead goes for a more natural image.
“I want people to look comfortable in their environment,” she says, “I like to photograph them interacting with each other instead of posing. I encourage them to walk around, play together, and relax.”
“I recharge my creative batteries by doing underwater, aerial, and nature photography,” she says. The reefs off the Florida Keys are a perfect theater for Dowdall’s work and her bird images are ripe with intimacy and personality. A delightful imageof a bottlenose dolphin playfully tossing a coconut in the air is nothing short of a perfect moment captured perfectly.
Check out Dowdall’s offerings at www.marcophotos.com and plan on meeting her at the July 25th ArtWalk. You can also view (and purchase!) her recently published book of photographs on and about Marco Island.
And if you’re looking for Rightside artist Lee Horton – don’t panic! He’s moved across the courtyard to Waterfront Gallery. The upcoming Colony ArtWalk (last Wednesday of e v e r y month) celebrates summer with a Beach Party! Art, music, refreshments all geared to a party on the beach – attendees are encouraged to have a little fun and wear their favorite beach attire. Wednesday, July 25, 5-8 PM.
By the way, I still look forward to hearing your suggestions of artists, art venues, and other cultural happenings at taraogal firstname.lastname@example.org.
