Downpours, heavy traffic, long lines…not a problem! Nothing deterred hockey fans from packing Germain Arena to cheer on the Florida Everblades for Games 3, 4 and 5 of the Kelly Cup Final on home ice.
Fans were treated to two overtimes and one shutout. After suffering a tough overtime loss in Game 3, the Everblades headed into Game 4 down 1-2 in the best-of-seven series. At first, Friday night’s action-packed game looked like a runaway victory for the Everblades. The 5-2 devastion of the second period caused the Colorado Eagles to pull Goalie Joe Cannata for Sam Brittain. At 1:13 of the third period, Stephen Lorentz fired a shot into the Eagles’ net, securing a 6-2 lead…or so the Everblades and their fans thought. In fact, many left early, feeling a victory was imminent. As the third period progressed, however, the air in the arena changed as the Eagles inched closer to the lead as Everblades’ tempers flared, and penalties mounted. When the Eagles tied the score at 6-6, the once cheering fans slouched in their seats as they braced themselves for overtime. The few, remaining fans rose to their feet, cheering wildly after Gus Young’s overtime winning goal.
Cooler heads prevailed, and Goalie Martin Ouellette stopped 24 shots in the Game 5 shutout 5-0 victory over the Colorado Eagles.
“Hats off to our team! The guys came out and executed a great game plan and played together as a team. We took a number of slashes in order to show our discipline and sacrifice for the win. That’s what it took, and we know what we can do moving forward,” remarks Everblades Coach Brad Ralph.
The series heads back to Loveland, Colorado for Game 6 to be played on Wednesday, June 6. Fans can tune into the game on WJBX (101.5, 104.3, 770-AM) or attend a watch party at the Breakaway Sports Pub located at Germain Arena. Game time is set for 9:05 PM and doors will open at 7 PM.
Everblades return home for Game 7 on Saturday, June 9 at 7 PM, if necessary.
