Enjoy Naturalist-Guided Boat & Kayak Tours

Submitted Photo

Experience Rookery Bay Research Reserve up-close and personal aboard a naturalist-guided kayak or boat tour. These tours have a relaxed pace with an emphasis on learning designed to help visitors develop a true sense of place and a deeper connection to this unique coastal wilderness.

With only six passengers on board, boat tours provide an intimate experience with nature. Kayak tours include all equipment and instruction. Each tour lasts two to three hours, and participants must be age 12 or older. All tours are led by Captain Randy, former Rookery Bay Research Reserve assistant manager and certified naturalist.

Several themed boat tours are available, each with different destinations, including:

Essence of an Estuary: this tour provides a profound understanding of this estuary like no other, with no destination! Captain Randy adapts to changes in weather, tides, and participants’ interests so no two tours are the same.

High Points: this tour disembarks at one of the highest points in Collier County. A short hike traverses an ancient sand dune relic from the Pleistocene Era. Great for geologists!

Life’s a Beach: this tour provides an opportunity to explore Keewaydin Island, a natural, living barrier island with an incredible diversity of life and some of the best shelling in Florida.

Sunset to Starlight: this one-of-a-kind tour takes place in the evening and is usually offered around the time of the full moon. After strolling the beach at sunset, guests will be immersed in the sounds and sensations of night in a mangrove-forested estuary on the return trip.

Treasure Island: this tour shares the amazing ecological treasure of a rare tropical hardwood hammock, with a short hike on a primitive trail in a shaded forest dripping with ferns and bromeliads.

While all tours provide a chance to see a diversity of native wildlife, boat tours offer a better platform for photography.
