One by one friends are leaving the island and heading back to their summer homes and May was showing signs of slowing down. Which means, you can finally get a table at your favorite restaurant and have plenty of time to catch up. Four of us headed to the Smith House Restaurant tucked away on Royal Palm Drive at the Shops of Olde Marco.
When Smith House first opened in November 2020, they started serving only breakfast and lunch. It quickly became the go to place for many residents as well as visitors. The Smith family gathered a very dedicated staff who had breakfast and lunch experience and knew how to deal with people. They also knew many of the residents and what they wanted. Staff is always super friendly and very attentive.
While talking to Martina Smith (co-owner), she confirmed that their menu is more of classic American cuisine. Daughter, Michaela Smith, added “you know, everything is made in-house; all the baked goods, desserts are made in-house from scratch and the meats are all roasted in-house.”
Smith House also has a very talented Pastry Chef, Athena Mangan, who takes pride in her creatively delicious assortment of tropical desserts and yummy muffins. To die for are Smith House’s very own coconut cream cake with cream cheese frosting, key lime mousse parfait and the house signature and ever popular triple chocolate mousse cake.
Oh no, but I am not a “sweet person”. But I can attest that the triple chocolate mousse cake is just right. After dinner, if you are craving for a taste of something chocolate – this is the perfect “sharing” dessert to finish the meal. It is light, delicious, and not too sweet. I finished my own slice and even ordered three more slices to take home for family and friends. This is so popular that customers would order a whole triple chocolate mousse cake for special occasions.
And another specialty dessert that is unique to Smith House is Athena’s very own version of the classic s’mores. Not to give away the “secret recipe”, this is made with homemade graham cracker and homemade marshmallows and takes two days to prepare. Then it is served on a little skillet with the marshmallows browned and ready to melt in your mouth just before serving.
Every day Smith House offers breakfast specials. For the morning of our visit, they featured assorted homemade quiches, Irish Benedict, and country style fried chicken. I was impressed with the list of muffins from Chef Athena’s oven which featured blueberry oatmeal, mango, strawberry, raspberry muffin, white chocolate muffin and caramel pecan roll. According to Michaela, their baked specialties have a loyal following with clientele calling early in the morning to inquire and reserve their favorite muffin.
The outdoor patio is a favorite place to sip coffee, contemplate your day and slowly savor a muffin or a pecan roll. Since November, Smith House is becoming a new favorite breakfast place on Marco. If you want the full Smith House experience, try their dinner menu.
Another breakfast recommendation from friends is the classic Eggs Benedict and popular items for lunch are their veggie wraps and the chicken salad…or try their Reuben sandwich. Their waffles and pancakes are all gluten free.
According to Martina Smith, they’ve had a good season. Now they are getting ready for the summer. Chef Tom Miller has been their dinner, breakfast, and lunch innovator.
For our lunch visit that day the classic Cob Salad was very healthy, fresh, filling, and delicious. And you can bring your dog – the staff will bring over a water bowl and a tasty treat.
