Encouraging Bike Helmet Safety

The Marco Island Police Department is educating, promoting and rewarding positive behavior.

The Department is partnering with local businesses, schools and the Marco Island Police Foundation to increase helmet usage by bicycle riders. Florida law requires that bicycle riders or passengers under sixteen years of age must wear a bicycle helmet that is properly fitted and is fastened securely upon the rider or passenger’s head by a strap and meets federal standards for bicycle helmets.

This educational and reward program provides incentives to those under sixteen years of age wearing helmets, and more importantly provide helmets to those in need of one. Officers will be providing specialized “citations” for ice cream at BeeBe’s Ice Cream, Cold Stone Creamery & Sweet Annie’s Ice Cream Parlor to those demonstrating safe behavior – wearing a helmet. For those observed operating a bicycle without a helmet, a warning citation will be issued that may be redeemed for a free bicycle helmet provided by the Marco Island Police Department and Police Foundation.

The Department thanks our community partners for assisting in promoting this program – we are fully aware we work #BetterTogether.
