The Lely High School Swim Team had a lot to celebrate on Saturday, October 20 due to the generosity of the community and the Elks Lodge #2010 located at 11250 Tamiami Trail East where the swim team held their first-ever car wash.
“There has been a constant stream of cars since we opened at 9 AM. I am speechless. The support is overwhelming. Proceeds from today will be used to buy new uniforms and equipment which our team desperately needs,” explained Coach Nicole Cholka. “We used to practice at the Golden Gate Community Center. Now, with the opening of Eagle Lakes, our practices are within walking distance of the school, which has caused our team to expand. We now have nearly 30 members on the Lely swim team. We are so thankful to Donna Fiala. She has supported us every step of the way.”
Following the car wash, the Elks served a hot dog lunch to the team. As the kids were eating, Mary Jo Wojciechowski made announcements and presented Coach Sander Langebeeke with a check.
“We want your team to know that you have our support. We want to present you with this check for $2,500 to help purchase uniforms. You may also use our location anytime you’d like for future car washes,” explained Mary Jo Wojciechowski, Elks Past Exalted Ruler.
“You worked really hard, and I’m very proud of you. Your hard work paid off. We raised $800 today,” exclaimed Coach Langebeeke as he addressed his team. “That’s $800 from the car wash in addition to the check for $2,500 from the Elks! I want to extend a big thank you to the Elks. They do so much for us.”
