The Marco Beach Ocean Resort received the Waste Reduction Award for contributing to the greater good of Collier County by promoting the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” philosophy, thereby helping to prolong the usable life of the Collier County landfill, thus keeping all of our landfill fees lower. Jeffrey Bullock, Hotel Manager, and Branka Guberina, Operations Manager, received the award for the hotel. In 2010, the Marco Beach Ocean Resort was awarded a Green Lodging designation by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
They expanded their recycling program to include placing recycling containers throughout the 98 units, two offices and the beach area to encourage guests to recycle newspaper, magazines, cardboard, cans, glass and plastics. They initiated the “reuse” program by donating excess toiletry items, linen and furniture to local charities and shelters.
A huge thank you goes out to the hotel for all of their efforts! Collier County boasts one of the lowest trash collection fees in the entire state of Florida at $173 a year. Almost $100 less than our neighboring Lee County.
Just a side note: The Marco Island Hilton scooped up two Palm awards for energy saving in 2009 for its efforts to promote environmental friendly practices at the hotel such as water conservation, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and transportation, along with waste reduction, recycling, changed the turfgrass to reduce water needs, and drought tolerant plantings. Mac Chaudhry, general manager, proudly received this Green Lodgings award on behalf of the hotel and gave credit to his employees.
The Collier Area Transit (CAT buses) will be joining Lee Tran for a new and exciting feature for those of you who would like to travel all the way to Lee County shopping, but don’t like the drive. On October 6th there will be a celebration announcing the combined efforts between the Lee and Collier Transit. LeeTran will begin service to and from Collier County with the new LinC route. The bus will transfer passengers at the Creekside Commerce Park, just off Immokalee Road. This link will also enable employees traveling fromone county to the other to get to work. The Civil Air Patrol, Florida Wing, and Marco Island is honored to have been selected as the Squadron to host the US Air Force evaluators, who will be here on November 5th. Training is high on the list of CAP activities, as they can be called upon at any time to respond to local, regional, state or national emergencies.
To assure high standards are met, the USAF periodically tests each state Wing for mission effectiveness, referred to as a Search and Rescue Evaluation. CAP volunteer pilots, observers, and support staff members came to Marco to participate in training for the Evaluation by conducting simulated search and homeland security missions that may be required in real emergencies. They have been rehearsing since September 10th for the upcoming evaluation. Lt. Col. Ava Farrar, CAP-USAF Reserve Assistance Officer, stated: “Marco Island has an ideal CAP facility for conducting SAR and Homeland Security missions. We will be watching for their successful outcome.”
What fun we’ve had this past weekend! It seems no matter where I go there is bustling activity, and the regulars are always there, such as Dick Shanahan, Joe Granda and Lou and Barb Prigge. I had dinner the other night with Lou & Barb, and their friends Bill & Roseanne, plus my son, Todd and his wife, Cathy. A delightful evening with friends was everything a person could wish for!
The Caxambas Republican Club of Marco Island is going strong! (all of the above were there as well!) Litha Berger absolutely pours her heart and soul into that club, and at their first meeting they had 90 people! ! Wow, is that a successful start. Keep up the great work, Litha!
And what fun the 1st ever Rib Cook-off was at the Brewery! (all of the regular helpers were present again.) It was very well attended, and everyone was laughing and having a marvelous time. I am so lucky to be a part of the Marco Island community!
