On 08/05/2011 at approximately 2:52PM Officers from the Marco Island Police Department were dispatched to a hit and run / injury crash at the intersection of North Collier Blvd and North Barfield Drive. While enroute to the scene MIPD also received calls of multiple crashes on East Elkcam Circle as well as North Barfield at Lilac Ave.
Communications advised that all of the callers reported that a gold Toyota Camry had been involved in the crashes and fled the scene. One of the callers had followed the Toyota Camry to a residence on Mulberry Court and was able to provide a vehicle description and license plate for the vehicle involved in the crashes.
Sequence of events:
The first crash occurred as the gold Camry was southbound on North Barfield near Lilac Ave, when the gold Camry ran into the rear of a Mazda knocking it off the right side of the roadway where it struck a tree. The Camry continued southbound and went left of center and struck a Lexus head on and then continued southbound on North Barfield where it then made a right turn onto North Collier Blvd. Three individuals were injured in the Lexus / Camry crash and one in the Mazda / Camry crash. All three individuals injured in the Lexus / Mazda crash were transported by EMS.
The Camry then made a right turn onto East Elkcam from North Collier and went left of center striking a Ford Expedition. The Camry continued and drove off the right side of Elkcam striking Cedar Bay Marina’s sign and mailboxes. The Camry continued on Elkcam and ran into the rear of a Ford mini van that was slowing to make a left turn off of Elkcam. The Camry went around the van and went off the left side of the Elkcam striking both a fence and metal pole at Allard’s Storage. The Camry turned around, re-entering East Elkcam, heading towards Barfield, when the Expedition that had been previously been hit began following the Camry. The Camry turned right (south) onto North Barfield and drove to Mulberry Court where it turned right and pulled into an driveway of a single family home on Mulberry Court, subsequently pulling into and striking the garage. The driver of the Camry then shut the garage door.
The driver of the Camry initially refused to exit the residence; however Officers were successful in obtaining voluntary compliance and the driver of the Camry exited the residence. The driver of the Camry was identified as Ronald Wallace (49 YOA) of Marco Island. Wallace provided investigating officers access to the Camry.
Wallace was positively identified by several eyewitnesses and confessed to being involved in a vehicle crash or crashes.
Wallace is being charged with multiple counts of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash (injury & property damage) and DUI.
