To Your Health

We have all heard the story about those who come to Southwest Florida for a vacation and essentially never leave. For Physicians Regional Healthcare System’s Dr. Bryan Hanypsiak, this all-too-familiar story has a slightly different twist.

Dr. Hanypsiak lived and worked in Naples for several years. As director of medical education at Arthrex, he supervised the training of thousands of orthopedic surgeons. However, the education was ultimately two-fold. “I also had surgeons from around the world coming to Arthrex and showing me the latest tips and tricks in surgery,” he says. “It was like a five-year fellowship. I feel like I’m a much better surgeon for having had that experience.”

When Dr. Hanypsiak chose “to be a physician again,” he left Collier County for a new position in New York City before he changed his mind and essentially came back home again. It seems the quality of life that brings so many to Florida’s Gulf Coast became an irresistible force of nature to Dr. Hanypsiak and his family. They are back and they are here to stay!

When asked what first prompted him to specialize in orthopedics, Dr. Hanypsiak responded in a very personal way: “My love of sports and my own knee injuries. I know firsthand how quickly you can go from running at top speed to not being able to walk. My training has taken me to the NFL, NHL, NBA and MLB as a physician, and provided me with the training to help others return to their sports. By combining the two things I love most—orthopedic surgery and sports—my job doesn’t ever feel like work.”

Another reason for the return to Naples: The sports-loving Hanypsiak family cherishes their time spent outdoors.

Orthopedics focuses on conditions and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. At Physicians Regional, “in-house” orthopedic care covers everything from consultations to post-operative care. With this full spectrum of services available, our orthopedics team recommends care solely based on individual needs.

We are extremely proud of the breadth of talent seen at the Total Joint Center at Physicians Regional Healthcare System. Dr. Hanypsiak and his colleagues regularly address arthritis care, joint replacement, orthopedic surgery, rehabilitation, spine care and sports medicine.

Dr. Hanypsiak expects that most his time will be spent on shoulder and knee surgery (including replacements), cartilage transplants and joint-preservation procedures such as hip arthroscopy, robotic-assisted knee replacements, ultrasound evaluation of acute injuries, and ultrasound guided injections of the hip.

A Buffalo native, Dr. Hanypsiak received his B.S. in Biomedical Sciences as well as his M.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He went on to receive advanced training through an internship at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He would later become the chief resident at that same facility.

Dr. Hanypsiak was fellowship-trained in orthopedics at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. In another unique spin, this specific assignment helped to prepare Dr. Hanypsiak for life at Physicians Regional. “I trained at the Cleveland Clinic and our sports medicine facility is nearly identical to the building that housed our clinics and operating rooms in Cleveland, so it already feels like home.”

Dr. Hanypsiak’s professional home is now the Total Joint Center at Physicians Regional Healthcare System. In addition to his new role at Physicians Regional, he is currently editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Orthopedics.

“I treat patients the way I would want to be treated. I explain my thought process thoroughly, provide time to ask questions, and answer them directly,” he says. “I have never told a patient that they can’t return to something they love to do. It’s my job to make sure they can return.”

When asked to provide the best advice he has ever received, Dr. Hanypsiak, the athlete/surgeon certainly didn’t disappoint: “Let your actions speak so loudly that no one can hear what you say.”

Do you have to be an athlete to see Dr. Hanypsiak? Absolutely not. But rest assured, he will treat you as if you are going for the gold.
