On May 11th the Chairman of Marco Island City Council, Larry Sacher, will present the Commander of Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron, Peggy Reiss, with a Proclamation to have the week of May 16th – 22nd declared National Safe Boating Week on Marco Island. We would like to have as many people as possible attend the event outside of City Hall on May 11th at 4:45 PM for the presentation ceremony and the photograph.

The Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron (MISPS), a squadron in the United States Power Squadron™, has always taught boating classes for boaters of all skill levels. The foundation of the classes is to be safe on the water through knowledge of boating and experience of the local waters. The educational classes are designed by highly experienced boaters with many years of boating experience and with the guidance of the State and Federal laws of boating. MISPS class instructors have enjoyed many years of boating in our area, are familiar with the class material, and enjoy teaching new boaters.

The National Safe Boating Council and the Canadian Safe Boating Council are jointly sponsoring National Safe Boating Week, May 16 – May 22. The organizations want to remind boaters to be safe on the water and to always wear a life jacket. For more information about the safe boating campaign, go to www.SafeBoatingCampaign.com.

The Safe Boating Campaign is sponsoring a major campaign that lasts all year long, the Ready, Set, Wear IT! Campaign. This campaign is making boaters aware that they, their families and friends, should always wear a life jacket whenever on the water. In 84% of all boating accidental deaths on the water, people were not wearing a life jacket. For more information about the Ready, Set, Wear IT! Campaign, go to www.ReadySetWearIT.com.

This year the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron has accepted the responsibility to rally the safe boating organizations of SW Florida into a unified voice to wear a life jacket when on the water. The organizations are encouraging their memberships and individuals to wear their life jacket and come to Rose Marina, 951 Bald Eagle Dr., Marco Island, on May 16th, at 9:30 am to be part of setting a new World Record for most life jackets worn at one time. Rose Marina will be one site among hundreds of sites all over the world participating in setting the record. The current world record is nearly 7,000 participants.

Participants need to arrive between 9:00 – 9:30 AM to register for the event. Everyone must register in order to be included in the total count. Registered participants will be given a Certificate of Participation and a ticket for a chance for the door prize of an inflatable life jacket donated by Rose Marina.

The photo and sign-up sheets will then be sent to the United States Power Squadron for verification and entry into the World Record count. We are hoping for a large turnout.
