Donald E. Condee, 82, or Marco Island, died December 29th, 2010. He was born in Macomb, Illinois on December 7th, 1928 and raised in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. His parents were Beatrice (Bea) and Verlin Condee. While at Mt. Sterling High School, he played trumpet in a band, and was on the winning basketball team. For that, he was awarded a scholarship with Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a minor in accounting. His fraternity was Tau Kappa Epsilon and he was also in the college quartet. To help get through college, he rented refrigerators to the married students that lived in the barracks and also serviced gas equipment and LP tanks for a local hardware store.

After college, in the summer of 1950, he returned to Mt. Sterling and formed his own company called Condee Refrigeration Service. In the early 1960’s, along with his refrigeration business servicing locker plants, apple storages, grocery stores, and taverns, he combined an LP business that had been started by his father into an overall business called Condee, Inc. While in Mt. Sterling, he was a member of Rotary (20+ years, president one year) and instrumental in forming the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the local golf course. He was involved with the construction of radio stations, filing for CP’s in Illinois and owned one fourth of Jerseyville station. He filed for a first service to Bowling Green, Missouri and lost out to KWK in St. Louis. With a group he formed, he constructed and served as director of the second bank in Schuyler County Illinois.

Also in the early 1960’s he earned his pilot’s license, which was mainly used for business and lead to forming the present business on Marco Island, Florida. He also acquired commercial, instrument, and multi-engine and over 2600 hours in the air. Much of this was on the many trips from Florida to Illinois. In Illinois, he and a couple of friends leased a 3000 ft. strip of land and built a 4 “T” Hangars. On arrival in Florida, he landed on Marco Island on a landing strip just south of Smokehouse Bay. Most of that area is canals now.

Mary Lou and Don, Sr. were married in Florida in 1972 and both spent many hours building up the business, now located at Front Street in Marco Island. Condee Cooling and Electric now has a number of family members in different phases of the operation. With this dedicated help and other loyal employees, they have managed to get away and travel some and in recent years had many boat trips around Florida, the Keys and the Bahamas. He was a past Commodore of Naples Sailing and Yacht Club in 1986 and a member for 30 years. He loved fishing, diving, flying and cruising on his 41′ Hatteras, the CON-DUIT.
