On December 13, 2017, Lynn Ann Genevie of Marco Island drove her car to the north side of the S.S. Jolley Bridge, put a note under her windshield wiper, and jumped.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has released a detailed report on this tragic incident.
Around 6:30 in the morning, a female runner passed Genevie as she was exiting her vehicle, carrying a white stool. The women said good morning to each other. The runner reported it did not appear that Genevie was feeling out of the ordinary. She continued her run, and when she reached the half point on the bridge, she could still see the stool, but not Genevie. The runner used her cell phone to call her husband, who reported the incident to the Marco Island Police Department (MIPD).
Medic Rescue 77 and Marco Island Fire Rescue boats 50 and 90 responded. Medic Rescue 77 located Genevie’s body in the water, approximately one-half mile east of the Jolley Bridge. She was pronounced dead at 7:10 AM.
In the suicide note she left on her car, Genevie identified herself, and provided her address. She explained her actions, stating, “I have jumped from the bridge due to my intractable back pain.” She asked that her car be returned and that her husband Ron be notified.
Genevie also left a suicide note at her home, which her husband later found. He drove to the bridge and was escorted back to his residence by a MIPD officer.
