The Democratic Women’s Club of Marco (DWCM) presented a check for $3,040 to School Counselor Deborah Eby and Principal Dr. Laurie Mearsheimer of the Manatee Elementary School at its January meeting. The DWCM formed a partnership with Manatee School where many of their students come from families whose parents are low-income workers and farmers. DWCM conducted a very successful silent auction and raffle which culminated in this contribution to help fund the Leader in Me Program. This endeavor was one of many community outreach programs the DWCM held in 2019.

Additional events included donations of hundreds of books for the Manatee Elementary School Library and Media Center, a collection of blankets for the migrant farmworkers, carloads of everyday items much needed by Habitat families and vanloads of items for The Shelter for Abused Women and Children. The club also collected over $700 and donated 40 pairs of shoes for children in need through the Laces for Love organization.

After the presentation, Sara McFadden, the Democratic Candidate for the Florida Legislature State House District 106, spoke about her extensive platform. She is a former small business owner and a current community volunteer. Candidate McFadden spoke of women’s rights, telling the group of over 70 people, that of all the Florida Legislators, only 25% are female, which needs to change. She promised focused leadership with practical solutions that don’t waste time, precious resources or tax dollars. She urges all Floridians to vote in the next election; there are so many important things at stake. If you have any questions, wish to volunteer or contribute, you can email her at sara@saramcfadden.com. Her website is SaraMcFadden.com. Vanessa Grisco, a member of the Bernie Sanders campaign, then spoke briefly about supporting the candidate.
