From March 17-20, 2016, the Marco Island Community Sailing Center (MICSC) had the privilege of hosting a U.S. Sailing Association (USSA) Level I Instructor Certification course. The purpose of this course is to teach prospective instructors how to properly teach individuals to sail safely, effectively and creatively, with a goal of producing highly qualified instructors.

USSA is the governing body that provides the guidelines and oversees all organized sailing activities in the United States. Rocky Cale, MICSC president, arranged to have USSA hold the Level I Certification Course on Marco Island, in part to allow some of the MICSC’s former students to be able to take the course thus providing the MICSC program with a pipeline of “home-grown” instructors.

The Level I Instructor Certification Course is a comprehensive four-day, 40-hour course conducted in the classroom and on the water. Topics

covered included: classroom and on-the-water teaching techniques, risk management, safety, creative activities, and sports physiology and psychology. Each student was required to give three presentations and to successfully pass three written tests.

This was the second USSA Level I Instructor Certification Course conducted on Marco Island, and the USSA Lead Instructor Jabbo Gordon of Jacksonville, Florida, said that this was one of the best groups of students that he had ever taught. The maximum class size of 12 was composed of two adults and ten youth, ages 15-17. There were four students from Florida as well as attendees from Washington, Iowa, Wisconsin, Maine, Tennessee, Massachusetts and New York. Eleven of the twelve students successfully completed this intensive course and are now certified USSA Level I Sailing Instructors.
