Counterfeit Bill Turns up on Marco Island

According to a Marco Island Police Department Report, on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at approximately 9:23 AM, Marco Island Police were called to the Mobil gas station on Bald Eagle Drive and Barfield Drive for a report of a counterfeit $20 bill.

The Mobil gas station clerk advised officers that a white male attempted to purchase a Florida Lottery ticket with a fake $20 bill. Printed on the bill was “PROP MONEY” and “Rozetta Prop Money” and it did not feel like a real bill.

The clerk advised the customer that the police would be notified, and the counterfeit bill turned over to them. The customer, surprised, stated to the clerk that he “must have received it earlier at Doreen’s restaurant this morning.”

The customer left his phone number with the clerk and later spoke to officers. According to the police report, he stated that he and his wife are in Marco on vacation. He states that they were at Doreen’s restaurant for breakfast where he paid with an $100-dollar bill and received three $20 bills in change. He said that he did not notice the fake bill until he went to the Mobil station to buy a lottery ticket and the clerk pointed it out.

The man returned to Doreen’s and was given a valid $20 bill.

There are no other similar incidents have been reported recently, according to Police Captain David Baer.
