Island Garden Center owner Chris Burt hosted a workshop on container gardening for members of the Calusa Garden Club, as part of the club’s November program.  Members had fun getting helpful tips on potting mixes, watering, spacing and pairing of plants.

Annuals are the mainstay of a blooming garden, providing instant color and variety. Some annuals grow upright, trail, vine or mound. Add them to containers and they become perfect for patios, lanais, windowsills and condo
balconies.

There are many benefits to container gardening. This type of gardening is very accessible for those with limited mobility, since

you can adjust the height of the container. There is no weeding, since weeds are unlikely to grow in small spaces. You need very few tools and it is easy to replace plants once flowering is finished. There are fewer problems with pesky pets, and you spend less time weeding and more time enjoying. Containers also make great front entry accents or focal points on your patio.

Get creative and head out to the Island Garden Center for your favorite annuals and to see their collection of containers. Island Garden Center is located at 1882 San Marco Road.
