COMMUNITY GEARS UP FOR 6TH ANNUAL EMPTY BOWLS

What do homemade soup and handmade ceramic bowls have in common? They’re being featured at the Saturday, January 26 Empty Bowls event being held at Cambier Park, Naples. The Naples community is gearing up to participate in the sixth annual event, which will take place between 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event is an annual fund raiser for the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

For a $10 donation, those attending can select a handmade ceramic bowl and sample from at least 38 tasty soups. Not only would the selected bowl be a wonderful, useful item in the home, but the purchase of an additional bowl would also make an excellent gift.

At least 2,000 bowls made by Collier County students and adults will be available. At least 38 local restaurants will be providing a minimum of 10 gallons of their specialty soup. The soups will be served to the public by a variety of celebrities.

Local artisans are contributing items for the popular silent auction. Participants will also be able to obtain bowls from the “pay and take” area. Entertainment, including performances by Higher Ground Band, the Ramos Brothers, and the Jazz Band, will be provided throughout the event and the Barron Collier High School drum line will perform prior to the 11:00 a.m. event start. Steve Coburn will sing the National Anthem at 11:00.

Co-chairs for this year’s event are Betsy Dawson and Rochelle Moore. The event’s presenting sponsor is Panera Bread. Additional sponsors include Robert Abraham, Orthodontics; Y. T. Freeman; Cynthia Strohmeyer, MD; Needles & Thread, Inc.; Humiston & Moore, Engineers; Ann Ciccarelli; AvAirPros; Paula Mitchell; Audrey Morean Petersen; and Warner and Pati Blow; Taylor Rental/Party Plus; Vitas, Sweetbay; North Collier Jr. Women’s Club; Publix; Costco; and Barron Collier High School.

Over 1 million pounds of food are distributed by the Harry Chapin Food Bank monthly. For every dollar donated, about $6 in food value goes back to the community. In the past fiscal year, the Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed more than 15 million pounds of food and other grocery items valued at more than $24.9 million. This is roughly the equivalent of 12.5 million meals to people in need.
