Hooray, Hooray! The Fresh Market held its Grand Opening this week – September 18th – in the Shoppes of Eagle Creek on the corner of Collier Blvd. and US-41. They let me have a sneak peek last week after all the shelves were in and they were assembling all the canned goods and preparing the fresh meat and produce departments. The walls were already decorated to make you feel like you are being welcomed into someone’s home. It looks awesome! I’m sure we’ll all flock to the store and want to shop there for all of our fresh foods. The manager was telling me they are famous for not using preservatives. I wasn’t aware of that. I wish I could get him to write a little something I can include, but I’ll have to wait until his grand opening is finished and all is settled in with his employees and his store. It always takes a couple weeks, doesn’t it?

*Work will begin shortly at Tigertail Beach to build a family bathroom in the large parking lot at the nearest point to the sandy beach. The plan was approved through the proper Marco committees and construction should begin shortly. We are hoping that many residents who drive over the bridge from Capri, Mainsail and Fiddler’s Creek will drive to that beach now that there is greater access to the water, and of course there is a concession stand with good food that will now offer beer and wine as well. This should also take some of the parking pressure off the South Beach area and swale-parking. Of course the birders already know this beach well, but not necessarily the beach I am directing you to.

*My girlfriend, Shirlee Barcic, and I dined at the new Marco Prime Steakhouse (the old Konrad’s) and what a delight it was! The service was outstanding, and the food was more than delicious! The place was crowded, so I bet most of you reading this were there. It stormed like crazy, but we were cozy and dry, even with the windows and shutters open. I know it’s only been open a short time, but it has become an instant success! They also offer valet parking. Congratulations to all who made this happen.

*The Marco Island Kiwanis Club has changed its meeting place to Stilts, 600 South Collier Blvd. The first meeting was held, feeling the gentle breezes off the Gulf. It was a beautiful background to a great meeting, and has elevators for those who are having a knee replacement. The food was really terrific. If you haven’t been to a meeting lately or have always wanted to attend a Kiwanis meeting, why not stop by? The meetings are held every Thursday morning at 7:30 AM and the cost of breakfast is a mere $12. Of course, we always give our Happy Dollars at each meeting as well as as plan for events and fund raisers. This Kiwanis Club is a mighty club with many active members who really care about Marco Island and its citizens.

*Recently I was invited to speak to some members of the YMCA on Marco about their needs and plans to rebuild. I could easily understand why. They have really outgrown their facility, with portables everywhere and (sorry to say) a little outdated looking. It’s exciting to see the plans beginning to take shape. I wish them a huge success for this vibrant part of our community.
