City’s Beautification Advisory Committee Announces Job Descriptions

Are you interested in becoming a Member of the Marco Island’s Beautification Advisory Committee (BAC)? Have you ever wondered what would be involved in being a Member? Do you hesitate to volunteer when the City seeks Committee Members?

Fear no more! The answers to your questions are right here. At the Marco Island Beautification Advisory Committee’s (BAC) regularly-scheduled meeting on July 7th, 2010, job descriptions were discussed, and the following is a summary of what it takes to be a Member, Chair or Vice-Chair of the BAC. While there are no vacancies on the Committee at the moment, the City advertises openings as they occur, so check the press and the City’s website (www.cityofmarcoisland.com) for announcements.

In general, consider the BAC to be a “working” committee. This means that every Member is expected to attend and participate in monthly meetings and occasional workshops (unless excused for a good reason), to attend Arbor Day celebrations, to speak before City Council and represent BAC issues, to observe and report on the condition of City landscaping and furnishings such as benches, street signs and lighting; and to take on special assignments as requested by the Chair or identified by the Committee, including researching and preparing reports for use by the Committee. New Members also attend a BAC orientation meeting, at which history and duties are addressed and questions are answered.

Not enough? Want to be Chair? The BAC Chair does all of the above. In addition the Chair attends various City Council meetings, hearings and seminars; works closely with the Director of Parks and Recreation and the Administrative Assistant to help create meeting minutes and agendas, writes letters and award recognitions, obtains flowers for pertinent occasions, and conducts meetings and workshops fairly and in according to Robert’s Rules of Order.

In addition to all Member responsibilities, the BAC Vice-Chair’s primary duty is to conduct meetings in the absence of the Chair, and to attend the monthly meeting with the Director of Parks and Recreation and BAC Chair which takes place prior to each monthly meeting.

The public is welcome to attend BAC meetings which generally take place on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 3pm at City Hall. Come see what we’re all about.
