For many people their only image of hypnosis has been distorted by Hollywood; Movies where an all-powerful hypnotist lulls a vulnerable subject into a deep trance, making them do and say outrageous things against their will.
In reality, nothing can be farther from the truth.
Both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association recognize hypnotherapy as a therapeutic treatment.
The word “hypnosis” is derived from the Greek word for sleep, hypnos. Although sleep is not necessarily the goal, hypnosis does produce a highly relaxed state. And although your body relaxes, your mind remains focused. Once deeply relaxed, most people become highly responsive to suggestion.
Recently, hypnotherapy was added to the list of wellness therapies offered at Skin Renewal Systems, with the addition of Cindy Adams.
Cindy has over 20 years experience as a certified hypnotherapist. She has a master’s degree in counseling and education. Following the devastation of Hurricane Andrew, Cindy began using hypnotherapy in her practice in Homestead, Florida to help people alleviate their extreme anxiety.
In her experience, she has seen people achieve great success with weight loss, smoking cessation, stress reduction and improving sleep disorders. She tells us that hypnotherapy can help almost any issue that affects people, such as anxiety, chronic pain, fear of flying, phobias, and even sports ability. With hypnosis you can address “anything you want to change in your life,” according to Cindy.
The process is similar to meditation, but with specific suggestions directed to fix problems and improve your life. In each session trust is developed further, and you will go deeper into a relaxed state becoming more open to the suggestions. Cindy also provides CDs to use at home, which reinforce the methods and success of the therapy.
Many people turn to hypnotherapy when other treatments have failed them. Some of the people Cindy helps have exhausted all other traditional methods available. Physicians often refer those patients to Cindy, to help with everything from pain management, fibromyalgia and migraines to IBS, high blood pressure, and arthritis.
Cindy believes in what she does. She herself has benefitted from hypnotherapy- having successfully used the methods to quit smoking. That success convinced her that it works, and she has seen it work in many others over the years. Hypnotherapy can help “anybody and everybody who wants to make a change,” Cindy says.
