Christmas- Goodland Style!

Goodland Life

There is absolutely no better time to be in Goodland than the holidays. With the Christmas Tree Lighting, Golf Cart Parade, Christmas House Lights Contest, Goodland Toy Drive, and the 4th Annual Misfit Island Christmas Party, Goodlanders are sure busy spreading the holiday cheer around our small village.

Malcolm Colley prepares for the Annual Tree Lighting.

On December 12th, all gathered on Pear Tree Avenue at the MarGood Harbor Park for the Annual Tree Lighting. Those who arrived early were serenaded by our own Merrill Allen. The countdown began, the switch was flipped, and the tree shined brightly! The community joined together singing Christmas carols and mingling in the park. “It was a beautiful community feeling,” exclaimed Shelly Colley. Many thanks to Jack and Mary Miller for donating this year’s twelve-foot beauty!

As most folks know, golf carts are a staple in Goodland. Over twenty golf carts (and two bicycles!) entered this year’s holiday Golf Cart Parade and contest. This year’s winners in the Annual Christmas Golf Cart Decorations Contest were:

1st Place: “Santa’s Sleigh,” Malcolm and Shelly Colley.

2nd Place: “The Grinch,” Alex, Amber and Sheila Oppliger.

3rd Place: Tonya Jones and Carla Cash.

Rob Brehm, Goodlander’s musical guru, along with Malcolm and Shelly Colley started a new tradition after a discussion at the local eatery, Crabby Lady. After actively participating in the toy drive on Marco Island for years, Rob thought the twenty-six children of Goodland would benefit from having a toy drive too. With the help of the Colleys, a plan was set in place and the Goodland Toy Drive officially was born. Flyers went up, contacts were made locally, and donations from our residents along with the Our Daily Bread Food Pantry from the Family Church of Marco Island came pouring in. Rob explained, “We put our heads together and reached out to the community for help. The village response has been wonderful, and there was not a child in Goodland that was not touched by our village’s act of love.” Shelly exclaimed, “I personally can’t thank the people of Goodland enough – the very reason I personally love it here. And having travelled most of the world, I can honestly say there is no place like Goodland.”

Everyone looked forward to the 4th Annual Misfit Island Christmas Party for Goodlanders. Planned by Rachele Sands-Simonis, every year it grows in attendance. On Christmas Day, Goodlanders bring a dish and celebrate at MarGood Park, sharing in feast and friendship, so that everyone has a place to call home on Christmas. Rachele said, “I do it all for my three-year-old daughter. I want her to experience the love I felt growing up. Her dad and I may be from up north, but we have never been from a place like this!”

Many beautiful home light displays can be seen around the village, as the house lights and decoration contest is in full swing. I encourage you to take a drive to Goodland and peruse our neighborhoods to see for yourself! While you are here, stop over at the Little Bar and check out their impressive collection of Nutcrackers. And don’t forget to visit our other fine retail and dining establishments: Stan’s Idle Hour, Island Woman, Kirk Fish Company and the Crabby Lady. From our Goodland family to yours, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2019!
