The Parish Center at the San Marco Catholic Church will be filled with music and more on Friday, Feb. 28, at 7:00PM. Multi-faceted performer Martha Gallagher shares her one-woman show of songs and stories celebrating the many facets of life, sprinkled with in-the-moment inspirations. The performance will benefit the San Marco Catholic Youth Group.

Gallagher, based in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, is a singer of many styles of music from Blues and Jazz to Contemporary Folk to Celtic. Her instrument of choice is not the expected guitar or piano, but is rather unique. It is the harp.

“The harp seems to have the reputation of only being able to play music that puts people to sleep. That’s just not true; the harp is an amazingly dynamic instrument, capable of an incredibly diverse range of music! I have a very diverse musical history and love bringing that music to the harp. So many people say to me after a performance, ‘Wow, I didn’t know a harp could do that kind of music!’ Well, it can and I do!” says Gallagher.

Gallagher also brings to the stage her love of acting and storytelling: “I’m not a storyteller of traditional tales or children’s stories; I weave the stories of everyday life. I bring them to life onstage, and what may seem to be a mundane moment in a long day becomes a jewel of a moment to be celebrated and cherished. It’s all in how we look at life.” Her theatre training spans from improvisation to circus arts to Shakespeare.

Gallagher entertains audiences all over the United States and Canada. She has performed with such luminaries as six-time Grammy winners The Chieftains. Several of her US solo tours were sponsored by The National Endowment for the Arts. She has been featured on many public radio programs around the nation, as well as appearing internationally on BBC TV. Gallagher has recorded and produced six CDs on her indie label Singing Strings. CDs will be available for purchase at the performance.

Offstage, Gallagher has been a visiting guest artist at The Berklee College of Music as well as The Boston Conservatory. She is a highly sought performer and teacher at international harp festivals. She works with students of all ages in educational residency settings and teaching programs that range in focus from Kindergarten age to college grads.

The concert is the third performance in as many years that Gallagher has done to benefit the San Marco Catholic Youth Group. “I was approached by the director of religious education, who is familiar with my music and performances, about doing a benefit for the youth group. The money raised allows these teens to attend conferences and camps with teens from all over the country. It sounded like a great idea, and I was happy to help. The kids involved with the group always help out with the concerts — distributing posters, selling tickets, serving refreshments, etc. They’re a wonderful group of kids!” says Gallagher.

Tickets for the Friday concert are $20, and are available in advance at the San Marco Catholic Church Parish Office, 851 San Marco Rd., Marco Island. Tickets will also be available at the door.
