Tonight is New Year’s Eve and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office wants you to ring in the year 2019 safely. To do that, they are recommending that you follow these basic tips as you celebrate:
- Use a ride service or taxi, or designate a sober driver if you plan to drink.
- If you plan to host a party, provide non-alcoholic drink options for guests.
- Report drunken drivers by calling 911.
- Remember that even if you don’t “feel drunk” the morning after a night of heavy drinking, your driving might still be impaired, according to the National institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
Deputies will be monitoring major intersections where drunken driving has been noted in the past. They will also be patrolling areas with bars and restaurants serving alcohol, making sure everyone gets home safely.
Deputies will also be cracking down on the illegal use of fireworks and the celebratory firing of guns. Using fireworks that explode or fly is illegal outside of professional and permitted demonstrations.
Firing a gun into the air is also against the law. Florida law states it is illegal to fire a gun in any public place, over an occupied building or house, or in the right of way of any paved road, highway or street.
See illegal use of fireworks or guns? Call 239-252-9300 to report it.
And if you’re still trying to decide on a New Year’s resolution, consider establishing a #9pmRoutine. Each night around 9 PM, CCSO recommends that Collier County residents lock their vehicles, homes and windows. Doing so helps avoid preventable crimes.
Have a safe and happy New Year!
