CAP Cadet Andrew Fordon Promoted

The Marco Island Civil Air Patrol Squadron is proud to announce the presentation of the Wright Brothers Award and promotion of Andrew G. Fordon to Cadet Staff Sergeant and Alpha Flight Commander. Cadet Fordon joined CAP at the minimum age of 12 and is rapidly completing his CAP training schedule.

Drew Fordon is in the 7th grade at the Marco Island Charter Middle School, and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. John Fordon, Osprey Ct, Marco Island. The promotion ceremony was held at the Cadet Squadron meeting. Also attending were several members of his family who have supported him in completing his achievements.

The Cadet Squadron meets at 6:30 pm every Tuesday, CAP Hangar, Marco Island Airport, and is under the direction of Lt Col Richard Wakefield, a retired airline captain. The Cadet Squadron Commander is Cadet Chief Master Sergeant Aiden Brennan.

Cadet activities include powered aircraft orientation flights, glider flights and training, attendance at air shows, field trips, leadership training, flight line training, mission assistance including radio direction-finding searching, camping and encampments, model rocket building and launching, drill teams and color guards, plus eligibility for Florida Wing and national activities and scholarships.

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 58,000 members nationwide. CAP performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and was credited by the AFRCC with saving 72 lives in fiscal year 2009. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counter-drug missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to the more than 23,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs.
