Amber Prange, City of Marco Island Parks and Recreation Department’s Teen Recreation Director, reported a successful first year at Camp Mackle for the City of Marco Island. The new camp replaced the old ‘Sports Club’ program and the renewed energy of the new camp was a big hit with children and parents alike. Each week, students took a look at a different country and all activities for the week carried a theme around the specific cultures and traditions of that country. In total, with both full-time and drop-in students, 169 children went through the camp. On an average day, as many as forty children went to the Camp. “We’re in the process of gathering feedback from parents so we can plan an even more successful camp next year! Part of the success was due to the great staff, counselors and the Leaders-In-Training we had working with us,” said Amber. Six counselors staffed the program and were assisted by 13 ‘Leaders-in-Training’ (LIT). The LIT program offered teenagers an opportunity to experience an employment scenario while earning community volunteer hours. Teens completed an official application and went through an interview process by Amber and Mindy Matusiak, Recreation Program Supervisor. The teens accepted into the program signed in and out as they worked to acquire the appropriate volunteer hours needed for some school programs such as the travel club. An end-of-the-year Appreciation Party was held at Woodside Lanes in recognition of all the effort by Park staff, counselors and LIT’s to make the summer a success.
