If you are a Marco Island resident, you may have heard of Camp Able. If you haven’t, however, Camp Able is a camp for persons of ‘special needs’ or ‘diverse abilities’ as we like to call it. Camp Able has been a tradition for many Collier County residents for the past 13 summers, it’s a vacation, birthday party, and family reunion all rolled up into one. Camp Able is a gift of mutual respect and compassion wrapped up in silliness and love.
Camp Able usually consists of a week jammed packed with all sorts of activities such as boating, fishing, canoeing, yoga, skeet shooting, pool-scuba diving, manicures & pedicures, arts & crafts, movies, mini–golf, waterslides, water balloon fights, games, a talent show open to the community, etc. Camp Able has been such an asset to this community and has even led some counselors participating in the camp to pursue careers in Special Education.
However, things look different this year. No one knew this pandemic was coming and no one knew how hard it would hit us. We have considered all possibilities of hosting an ‘in-person’ camp as usual, but have come to the conclusion that the risks outweigh the benefits. Even though this has saddened many us, we are not letting that stop us from ‘spreading the love!’
We have decided to host Camp Able virtually this year. It’s challenging, but we’re going to make it work! What does a virtual summer look like you may ask? Our virtual summer camp will consist of daily video chats with campers and counselors, virtual ‘quarantine/apocalyptic’ themed skits put on by counselors, arts and crafts video tutorials, dance/singalongs, trivia/jeopardy, scavenger hunts, yoga/aerobics, cooking classes, DIY spa days, discussions about life during this time, and much more. We are planning on sending ‘Camp Able in a box’ to all campers, which will include materials needed for these activities, and campers will also be participating in a live–streamed talent show!
If you would like to get involved, we could really use your help! In order to send ‘Camp Able in a box,’ and make some of these activities possible, we are asking for donations. We know this pandemic has hit hard for many, so we understand if you are unable to participate this year. We would like to thank our Marco Island community for always going above and beyond to help us out year after year and say that we truly miss you. We appreciate all your support in the past and look forward to seeing everyone stronger than ever before in 2021!
If you would like to donate, please mail your payment to Wesley United Methodist Church 350 South Barfield Drive Marco Island FL, making checks payable to Wesley UMC. Also, please write ‘Camp Able’ on the memo line.
