There are a number of remarkable teenagers on Marco Island. One of the most remarkable is Camille Richie, a junior at Lely High School who was honored by the Sons of the American Revolution on February 3 for her essay on the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC). Her essay is noteworthy for a number of significant points, including her emphasis on how JROTC is making her a better citizen and her increased awareness of the importance of teamwork. At Lely she was named the highest ranking Sophomore JROTC student in the history of the school.

Camille’s accomplishments, in an amazingly short time, would fill a large magazine. She’s an honor student with a 4.3 grade point average in dual enrollment at Lely and Edison State College (for U.S. History), and is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Spanish National Honor Society. She’s taking a slew of advanced placement courses in everything ranging from Calculus to Psychology, as well as a Marine Biology honors program (in collaboration with Rookery Bay).

Music? Of course. Camille plays trumpet in the Lely Marching Band, and the bass clarinet in the woodwind orchestra, and has taken piano lessons since 1st grade once a week. Naturally she plays all instruments extremely well.

Sports have not been neglected. Camille ran cross country for two years. She’s also an officer in the JROTC at Lely, was Captain of the JROTC Raiders Team, and was part of the first place color guard team in 2010. As a Junior, she was recognized as the outstanding JROTC cadet in Collier County.

In her “spare” time Camille works 8 hours a week at the “Big Publix” and just to be sure to serve her community, she volunteers for “The Love of Cats” every Wednesday.

Her proud Dad Michael Richie, is a ship captain; and Mom Nancy is a well-known environmental specialist for the City Of Marco Island.

No wonder the SAR chose Camille for their prestigious award for leadership, soldiery bearing and excellence.
