During their summer hiatus from meetings, Calusa Garden Club members were happy to be able to get together virtually, if not in person, through a virtual tour of Garden Club members’ gardens. Due to the Coronavirus, members were not able to meet socially, so Susan LaGrotta the First Vice-President of the Garden Club, planned a photographic tour of Garden Club members’ gardens and displayed the photos on the Club’s Facebook page. Garden Club President Sara Wolf accompanied LaGrotta on the tour to take photos for the Facebook page, and later collected the photos in a PowerPoint presentation that the members have viewed in Zoom get-togethers. The members reacted with excitement when they saw other members’ prized plants and flowers, their fruit trees, and their landscape designs.
A few of the gardens that were toured were Maria Lamb’s beautiful corner lot, which includes the largest live oak tree on Marco Island and many beautiful tropical plants, Janice Engel’s distinctive hillside with planting areas surrounding a large banyan tree with staghorn fern baskets, and Linda Turner’s low maintenance Florida-friendly landscape featuring many pineapples, Furcraea foetida (false agave) and a beautiful bougainvillea, among other distinctive plants. Garden Club Second Vice-President Sue Neustadt showed her full flowering jatropha trees. Janet Watson showed the Club her unusual black ti plants in a planting area inside her lanai that accents a corner pool fountain. While Linda Ariel posed under her very large mango tree.
