Margie Bramel, Linda Chute, Jane Gregory, Monna Hormel and Jo-Ann Sanborn were inducted as new members into the Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island at the November meeting. Vice-President of Membership Jackie Purvis and President Sandy Wallen welcomed new members with a membership certificate, a Calusa Garden Club Yearbook and a rose.
The gathering began with Lindy Kowalczyk’s floral design workshop, which emphasized leaf manipulation. Members practiced cutting and bending leaves and braiding palm fronds, and made their own floral designs. As part of the club’s Flowers in Public Places program, Marianne Foley took her floral design to Tommie Barfield Elementary School and Sharon Lewis took hers to the Marco Island YMCA.
Collier County Master Gardener Donna Willson, who creates distinctive container gardens, gave a presentation entitled “Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers.” This rhyming title refers to tall spiky plants that draw attention to a container, leafy plants (often with flowers) that fill out a container, and trailing or vine-like plants that soften the edge of a container by growing gracefully toward the ground.
Calusa Garden Club meets at 12:30 PM on the second Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 350 S. Barfield Drive, Marco Island. Email email@example.com or visit calusa.org for information.
