On Friday, October 14, Marco Island’s Calusa Garden Club hosted the Fall District IX Meeting of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. The event was held at the Hideaway Beach Club with approximately 120 attendees. A continental breakfast was served. The invocation was by Reverend Kevin Koenig of Marco Lutheran Church and the colors were presented by Lely High School’s JROTC. Jerry Gibson, Chairman of Marco Island City Council, welcomed everyone tothe meeting.
Following lunch, Charlette Roman presented her original informative program, “Marco’s Natural Magic,” which featured photographs she had taken in and around Marco Island. The pictures included birds from the A B C Islands, the eagles on Kice Island, a variety of starfish found on sandbars at low tide, Loggerhead turtle nests, and nesting birds found on Tigertail Beach and surrounding islands.
Prior to the beginning of the event and during breaks membersof Calusa Garden Club sponsored tables and booths of plants for sale, a raffle table, and displays of the Club’s history. Other clubs from District IX also participated with sales booths. At the conclusion all of the centerpieces, made by Calusa Garden Club members, were distributed to those participating in the event.
The Calusa Garden Club meets from October through April on the second Monday of the month. Meetings are held in FellowshipHall of Wesley United Methodist Church, 350 S. Barfield. A workshop is held at 11:00AM., a social time begins at 1:00PM., and the regular meeting, which includes a speaker, starts at 1:30PM. All meetings are open to the public with donations at the door. This year, a special night time meeting will be held on February 13 at the Marco Island Historical Society with Charlette Roman as speaker. For further information, call Linda Columbo at 642-6845.
