The Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island awards a college scholarship annually to a high school senior who resides on Marco Island. This year’s scholarship recipient is Teagan Havemeier, a 2019 graduate of Marco Island Academy. In addition, the Garden Club sponsors a fourth or fifth grade student from Tommie Barfield Elementary School for a week-long residential camp. Fifth-grade student Eliana Valencia is the recipient of the campership to Camp Wekiva, a camp sponsored by Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.
Calusa Garden Club Scholarship Chairperson Marianne Foley awarded Teagan Havemeier a $1,050 college scholarship at Marco Island Academy Awards Night in May. Havemeier is the valedictorian of the Marco Island Academy Class of 2019 and plans to attend University of Florida. Foley commented that one of Havemeier’s aspirations is to promote a greater understanding of how our actions on land and in our homes affects marine ecosystems. Havemeier hopes to pursue a career in environmental engineering that will allow her to design projects leading to environmental protection. Havemeier’s goals dovetail perfectly with one of Calusa Garden Club’s objectives, which is to increase knowledge of the environment and how to protect it.
Eliana Valencia, who is a fifth-grade student at Tommie Barfield Elementary School and has been a member of the Calusa Garden Club-sponsored after school group Junior Gardeners for three years, was excited to receive her campership to Camp Wekiva. Mrs. Foley attended the final meeting of Junior Gardeners in May to award the campership to Valencia. Valencia’s mother, Jessica Holt, attended the meeting as a surprise to congratulate her happy daughter.
Wekiva Youth Camp’s purpose is to instill in Florida youth a love and respect for Florida nature through nature study, conservation and protection of our environment.
