Butterflies & Floral Design at Calusa Garden Club Meeting

Calusa Garden Club met on March 11, 2019 for a workshop at the Calusa Park Butterfly Garden. The tour of the Butterfly Garden, located at 1441 Winterberry Drive across from the baseball fields, began with Susan LaGrotta telling the members about the Butterfly Release to be held on April 16 at 11 AM at the Butterfly Garden to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the founding of the garden. Donna Kay spoke to the members about the life cycle of the butterfly, illustrated by a poster, and Sue Oldershaw gave a walking tour to the members as she described the plants in the garden and noted whether the plant was used by a particular species of butterfly as a nectar plant or a host plant.

The Garden Club’s afternoon activity was held after its business meeting when Nancy Carrrington, florist and owner of Marco Island Florist & Gifts, gave a floral design demonstration. Annemarie Dalfonso, buyer and visual merchandiser at Marco Island Floral and Gifts, who is also a florist, assisted Carrington as she worked by identifying the flowers Carrington was choosing and describing the containers used in particular designs. In all, Carrington used anthurium, lilies, roses, birds of paradise, statice and ferns in addition to using rosette-style succulents, reindeer moss and kangaroo paw as accents in her designs. Carrington showed her technique for wiring succulents on picks or on strong wire to place in an arrangement. Garden Club members peppered Carrington and Dalfonso with questions about containers, flowers, their design inspirations, and techniques of design. Pictured are Carrington, Sandy Wallen, President of Calusa Garden Club, and Dalfonso showing several of the designs Carrington made in her demonstration.
