Businesses & Community Fight Cancer Together

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES
Lisa Honig

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over, kids are back in school and season is just around the corner. We have had a busy summer at The American Cancer Society and I wanted to update everyone about two recent events that without the support of our local businesses and citizens, would not have been possible.

The first was the 4th annual Stick a Fork in Cancer sponsored by WINK News. Local restaurants agree to participate and to donate a portion of one day’s revenue to the American Cancer Society. This year 56 restaurants from Charlotte, Lee and Collier Counties participated in the event with Marco Island participating for the first time. We want to thank 400 Pazzi’s (Marriott), Dolphin Tiki Bar and Grill, The Crazy Flamingo, Sand Bar and Joey’s Pizza and Pasta House for their support and we hope that they and more of our local restaurants will join us in 2014.

The second was a radiothon ‘Call to Fight’ hosted by WAVV 101.1 featuring cancer survivors from Lee and Collier Counties and their stories. You may have heard our own Hannah Adams and Marva Sutt tell their stories of courage, faith and family as they battled cancer in their own lives. It is not easy to go public with such personal and sometimes frightening health issues but by doing so they have raised awareness about cancer, encouraged others to keep fighting and to never give up and helped to raise funds that will allow ACS researchers to find a cure and to keep our local programs and services available for our community. There are more stories like Hannah’s and Marva’s and we salute them and all of you who continue to fight either as a survivor or caregiver to make sure that there are more birthdays. All of us at ACS want to say THANK YOU to WAVV and their on-air talent and technical staff for giving these wonderful survivors a platform to make a difference in our community.

There’s still much more to come from your local American Cancer Society team, so mark your calendars for one or all of the following activities happening soon:

September 12, 2013, Chico’s Shop for a Cause – Ovarian Research, a portion of all sales at locations in Naples and Marco Island will benefit Ovarian Cancer Research.

October 2-3, 2013 – CPS-3 is back! Yes, the Cancer Prevention Study-3 that was held here on Marco will be making one last stop in Naples at the NCH Downtown hospital and North hospital. If you are between 30-65 years of age and never had cancer (basal and squamous cell skin cancers excepted) then go to www.cancer.org/cps3florida to make your appointment. This is our opportunity to contribute to finding a cure for our kids and grandkids – spread the word!

October 20, 2013 – It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we are planning a Luau Night with proceeds to benefit Breast Cancer Research. Join us at the Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club for a fabulous buffet dinner, live music, a silent auction and fun contests!

January 19, 2014 – the American Cancer Society and the Island Country Club Charitable Foundation will partner to run their annual Golf Tournament.

February 15, 2014 – The Imagination Ball will be held at the Marco Island Marriott Beach and Spa to benefit all American Cancer Society Research and Programs.

March 22, 2014 – 4th Annual Shoot Down Kids Cancer at Port of the Islands Gun Club to benefit Pediatric Cancer Research.

April 19, 2013 – Walker’s Marine 2nd Annual Tarpon Fishing Tournament with proceeds going to Brain Cancer Research.

As you can see we are committed to fighting all cancers and to working with businesses and our community members on those issues that are important to them. Your support does make a difference in the lives of others and we appreciate your time and your treasure as we work together to finish the fight. Please call or stop by our office and visit with Sue or me to talk about ways you can help in this very important effort.
