As the title suggests, there’s a whole lot of drinking going on in “The Savannah Sipping Society” at The Marco Players Theater through March 31. This play was written by Jones, Hope and Wooten who have left their mark on favorites including “Always a Bridesmaid,” “The Golden Girls” and television for Warner Bros. and Walt Disney Studios.
In this play, four strong women form an unusual but unusually strong friendship after each of them endures a life-altering calamity. Lead character Randa (Patti Caroli) meets Dot and Marlafaye (Mai Puccio and Nancy Martin) at a yoga class, where none of them excel, but they do share their enthusiasm for less-healthy commiseration. Then, Dot throws a wrench into their first get-together by bringing along another new friend, Jinx (Casey Cobb), a beautician who also claims to be a “life coach,” an occupation she has little training, but plenty of enthusiasm.
Dark topics are treated lightly and lathered with self-deprecating humor as only Southern women can deliver it. The rapid-fire dialog is like watching a sitcom and director Anna Segreto gets great performances from all four women. Filled with laughter and hilarious misadventures, these women successfully bond and find the confidence to jumpstart their new lives. They discover lasting friendships and a renewed determination to live in the moment, and most importantly, realize it’s never too late to make new friends.
