The United States Power Squadron, the largest recreational boating organization in the US with more than 35,000 members, held their annual meeting at the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando, Florida during the last week in February. For over 100 years, the Power Squadron has worked to make boating safer through its extensive educational program. The local squadron, Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron, Inc. (MISPS), is a member of District 22, which encompasses 17 squadrons and over 3,400 members along the west coast of Florida.

Executive Officer Gene Burson attended the annual meeting, interacting with members from across the country, and learning about and sharing ideas for more programs and educational opportunities. Lt. Wanda Burson, an active member of the local squadron, as well as Co-chair of the Ways and Means Committee was also in attendance.

Past Commander Carl Thieme and Lt. Sheila Thieme also attended the Orlando event and participated in many seminars, learning about the new experiences in Co-Charting with the US Coast Guard.

Marco Island is blessed with an abundance of waterways and boating opportunities. MISPS offers many education courses from the very basic introduction (America’s Boating Class, ABC course) to boating safety in offshore navigation, which includes celestial navigation theory. There are opportunities to learn in the classroom through our many courses, using a virtual boat simulator/trainer and on-the-water exercises in your boat. Squadron members also participate in community and civic activities, as well as multiple social and boating activities.

We encourage you to “come for the boating,” and welcome you to “stay for the friends.”

Marco Island Sail & Power Squadron is located at 1114 N. Collier Blvd, Marco Island. For more information visit marcoislandsailandpowersquadron.org.
