The Marco Island Charter Middle School Board of Directors had one more surprise for George Abounader at his last board meeting as the school’s highly successful Principal and CEO.

“I had no idea this was going to happen,” Abounader said after the meeting. “A surprise recognition party I guess it was. They went around the circle and each board member had something very, very, nice to say about me. All good people, man. I’ve been blessed to have that board all of these years.”

Abounader concludes his 21-year career at the middle school at the end of June. The school has earned an A rating 19 times in his career—including 18 times in a row. Michele Wheeler, the current Assistant Principal, will replace Abounader.

“It’s been one heck of a run,” Abounader said.

George Abounader was presented with this sculpture by the Board of Directors at his last board meeting. He was the Principal and CEO of the island’s middle school for 21 years.
