Benefits of personal training

Q. I’ve been considering hiring a personal trainer… what are the benefits?

A. I’m so glad you asked! Everyone can benefit from a personal trainer- anyone from a novice to an experienced athlete. Age doesn’t matter either; my husband and I have trained children, teenagers, young adults, middle-aged adults, and mature adults. Like I said before, anyone can benefit! We all have different goals and an experienced and knowledgeable instructor can help you to achieve those goals. A trainer is able to motivate you and help you to get the most out of every workout– unlike when you have to rely on yourself.

A trainer can also challenge you more than you would (safely) be able to do yourself. It is important to note that the most serious fitness professionals expect a commitment from you in order to successfully help you to achieve your goals. A great aspect about working with a professional is that they can help you to get started; you will learn how to exercise appropriate to your fitness level and goals; you will also develop your own personal fitness regime. Another great benefit is that you will be in safe hands; a trainer will make sure that you are lifting appropriately, with perfect form at all times. A private setting is not mandatory, but is ideal so that there are no distractions to you or your fitness professional. One area that seems to be the most beneficial for the you (the client) is accountability; knowing that you have invested time and money in your scheduled appointments and that there is another person waiting for you at each session makes it difficult to skip a workout. Look for a trainer who has years of experience with a myriad of different clientele, a nationally recognized personal training certification, and “try before you buy”.

A great way to get to know a trainer and his/her program is to sign up for a consultation; the consult will give you an overview of the program, the trainer’s philosophy, a “feel” for the potential trainer, as well as a sample workout. Then you will have complete understanding of the prospective trainer (and program) and will have a better idea of what you are looking for. All in all, a great trainer is like the perfect shoe—it supports you, gets you from point A to point B, and makes you look great and feel great at the same time!
