Egyptians invented a game-now called Bocce-Around 5200 BC, Over 7000 years later on March 14, 2012, Marco Island Residents’ Beach hosted the third Annual Beach Bocce tournament to benefit childhood cancer research by St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Six teams of four players contested for the championship before enthusiastic fans cheering on their favorite teams. The championship team was captained by Gus Scola. Chairman Bob Newman said the real winners are the children being helped by research funded by St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The tournament raised over $1000 to further childhood cancer research.
Jim Whitmyer, one of the team captains for the third year, was the designated “shavee” which honors the young victims who lose their hair as a result of their chemo treatments.
