Artist of the Year/Scholarship Luncheon Planned

The Marco Island Foundation for the Arts (MIFA) will be giving scholarships to seven local students who will be majoring in areas of the arts including theater, music and art. This is a major project for MIFA which is a nonprofit organization that began in 2003. Students can continue earning an additional scholarship for a maximum of four years if they live on Marco Island, Goodland, or the Isle of Capri or attend school on Marco Island and continue to earn excellent grades and major in at least one area of the arts. This is the most students that have been approved for scholarships in one year. The Marco Island Foundation for the Art holds a variety of events each year to support their scholarship program including Left Bank Art Shows, Brushes and Paint Outdoor Art Shows held outside the Marco Island Historical Museum, and their winter movie series held at Marco Movies.

A luncheon is scheduled to award the scholarships and recognize the 2019 Artist of the Year, Sherri Morrison, on Saturday, June 8th at Wesley United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, beginning at 11:30 AM.

Students receiving scholarships for an additional year include Brianna Monroe, with a major in journalism and photography and attending the University of Florida in Gainesville; Anastasia Baran, majoring in art therapy at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers; Brenda Perez, majoring in art at Florida Southwestern State College in Fort Myers; and Logan Fischer, majoring in music education at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Three high school seniors graduating recently who will also be receiving scholarships include Luz Perez, a graduate of Lely High School who will be studying music education at the University of Florida at Gainesville; Harvey Millar, a graduate of Marco Island Academy who will be studying theater at Florida Southwestern State College in Fort Myers; and Emma Stone, also a graduate of Marco Island Academy who will be studying art at the Savannah College of Art and design in Georgia.

You are invited to join us at the luncheon on June 8th which will be catered by Stonewalls restaurant. Come cheer on our outstanding students and our Artist of the Year, Sherri Morrison.
