Around and about…

What a gorgeous day we had for the St. Patty’s Day Parade on Marco Island! Our own energetic, dynamic, Kathleen Reynolds was the spark plug that put this event together again this year. Mike Murphy was marvelous as the Grand Marshall of the parade. Father Tim was his effervescent self, and our ever-popular Dick Shanahan was riding right up front for everyone to enjoy. Jennifer Edwards, our Supervisor of Elections and Marco resident, looked darling in her St. Patty’s Day garb covered by an election vest, and of course I was honored to be asked again to ride in the parade, and in Bill Young’s exciting red Ferrari no less! Joe Grande and Steve Stefanides kept the traffic moving, the parade moving, the cars moving, the people moving, and probably ordered the best weather we could have hoped for as well. The festivities surrounding the parade were delightful with booths and food to please any palate. The entertainment was terrific, and those Irish Step Dancers were awesome! A few people remarked how wonderful it was to be able to just walk in to an event without wristbands or tickets and enjoy the day with your friends in the community, like in days gone by.

*On March 14th there will be a concert at Cambier Park in Naples marking 20 years of free big band concerts by the Gulf Coast Big Band. The band plays favorite big band sounds of the golden era of swing, with songs by such greats as Duke Ellinton, Count Basie, and Glen Miller. Band members range in age from the thirties to eighties and include several who play professionally around the county, but willingly give up their time for this worthy project.  This 501 (c) 3 band has received donations exceeding $75,000 which it has awarded as scholarships to deserving Collier County high school students seeking to advance their musical skills.

*Collier Blvd/951 median landscaping is looking pretty good these days. What a difference a landscaped median makes!

*Have you noticed all of the prep work being done at the new Lowe’s site at 951/U.S.41 behind Staples? They expect the store to be completely built by the end of September. In October and November they will be installing all the shelving, receiving and stocking all of their merchandise, hiring and training employees, and plan to be open for business on December 1st, 2010. This is really a good news item.

Thank you for taking the time to read this little column. See you in two weeks. Donna Fiala
