With season coming to a close, many of you are left frazzled and gasping for breath—I know we sure are! Each year I am amazed at how our small island seems to swell like a sponge filled with water. Most of you I’ve spoken with are exhausted and burned out from the constant demands of dealing with customers, clients, or even simply the traffic.
I’m here to remind you to breathe! Take three slow deep breaths, closing your eyes and clearing your thoughts. Imagine with each exhale that you are pushing stress further and further away from you like waves in the ocean. I do this all the time and what a difference it makes!
Now that May is approaching, we can shift our focus on summer, beaches, and barbeques. I call summer time lazy time because the island just seems to slow down where you can really enjoy everything that the snowbirds flock down here for.
Why don’t you make a deal with yourself that every Saturday (or any day you choose, really) will be a relaxing or fun day for you and your family? I recently made more of an effort to do this as my son became a toddler. I didn’t want him to always remember me being too busy working to get out and have fun.
My goal is to do something active each weekend. So far it’s been swimming, bike riding, the Naples Botanical Garden, the children’s museum, the library, and different parks. That’s because I have a toddler. There’s stand up paddle boarding, fishing, kayaking, or even walking on the beach. Now’s the time to get out and get active! Experience Marco like you’re the tourist! Look at it with fresh eyes and a new appreciation for paradise. It’s easy to take it all for granted when all you do is go to work and go home each day.
Try to do one thing each day that brings you joy; whether it’s a good book, checking in with a friend, savoring a piece of chocolate, or watching the sun rise as you drive over the Marco bridge (as I do).
Take time for yourself—it’s an investment you can’t go wrong with.
