Celebrate Gopher Tortoise Day at the Farmer’s Market. Join the Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory Committee and staff of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and learn all about Marco’s prehistoric residents – the Gopher Tortoises.
On April 1st, the Marco Island City Council proclaimed April 10th as Gopher Tortoise Day.
Gopher Tortoises have been living on the Earth for 500,000 to two million years and we have them right here in Marco. They are listed as State Threatened and in Marco Island, their habitat is slowly decreasing due to a construction boom.
The City of Marco Island encourages all its citizens to protect the gopher tortoises by leaning more about them.
