It’s time to hang up the dirty cleats and put away the black and white ball as soccer season has come to a close. The Marco Island Optimist soccer season is over. In ten exciting games, goals were scored and smiles were shared. Having the World Cup theme with countries represented from all over the globe, kids (and adults) learned a little about the country they represented. The 250 kids playing not only brushed up on their soccer skills; they made friends and learned about good sportsmanship, and a little geography.

The girls in kindergarten through fifth grade played soccer fantastically and had a lot of fun. The girl’s kindergarten and first grade teams were Spain (Scott and Stacy ERA Real Estate), Ireland (Island Country Club), and South Africa (Mr. Squeegy Window Cleaning). The girl’s second and third grade teams were Italy (Island Montessori Academy), England (Crystal Horizon, Inc. Your Happy Handyman), and Ireland (Poling Medical Center). The girl’s fourth and fifth grade teams were Ireland (Boxma Financial), Italy (Sasso’s), and Mexico (Allied Paver Systems). Good job girls and keep playing!

The boys in kindergarten through fifth grade tried their hardest and let their various talents shine. The boy’s kindergarten and first grade teams were Italy (Island Montessori Academy), Mexico (Nacho Mama’s), Holland (Marco Island Academy), and Greece (Marco Island Bobcat). The boy’s second and third

grade teams were Spain (Delta Q Fire and Explosion Consultants Inc.), Holland (Marco Island Academy), Brazil (Marco Island Marriot), and Mexico (Nacho Mama’s). The boy’s fourth grade and fifth grade teams were Germany (Island Electronics, LLC “The Shack”), Spain (Kriger Orthodontics), Brasil (Family Foot and Leg Center), and France (Megan Welker, DDS). Good job guys and keep playing!

The sixth through eighth graders played on Friday nights, under the lights and had some really competitive games! The girl’s sixth through eighth grade teams were Italy (Mr. Squeegy Window Cleaning), Germany (Gulfshore Insurance Inc.), and Australia (Marco Island Bobcat). The boy’s sixth through eighth grade teams were Spain (Island Country Club), Ireland (Kriger Orthodontics), and Greece (Physicians Regional Medical Center). Good job to all players!

Special thanks all the volunteer coaches, website managers, referees (especially Kim and Tim Burke) and all the parents for helping. Older players also were helpful volunteering their time to help referee the younger kid’s games. For their efforts, Stonewalls donated gift certificates to the volunteer referees. OCMI would also like to thank Marco Island Parks and Recreation Department for maintenance and preparations of the fields.

Next year, soccer signups will start in September, season starts in November. Brush up on your skills this summer with the British Challenger soccer camp co-sponsored by the Optimist Club and Marco Island Parks and Recreation. It will run from June 20th- 24th at Mackle Community Park for ages 3-14. Optimist Basketball sign-ups have begun.
