A Valentine’s Celebration to Remember

For the 29th year, the Naples Civitan Club teamed up with the Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled (FDD) to celebrate Valentine’s Day in style with their members.

Amid red balloons, Valentine’s Day decorations and smiling faces, these special adults came to the dinner-dance with family and caretakers for an unforgettable evening of music, dancing and delicious food.

The evening began with the welcoming words of club President Bill Shanahan, followed by a message from FDD Executive Director Karen Govern. This year again, Father Michael Orsi volunteered to give the invocation. After his words of salutation, Father Orsi invited the group to join him on the stage to say a prayer, which some of them did.

The young-at-heart adults packed the dance floor, energetically dancing with passion as they competed for a winner’s medal. Master of Ceremonies Darlyne Franklin and DJ and past president, Bob Kircher kept the rhythm going and the dance floor full the entire evening.

Bob Kircher said, “To see the delight and smiles on the faces of the participants, families and caretakers is absolutely exhilarating! The atmosphere of fun and glee is very rewarding, not just for the participants, but for the volunteers too.”

After the dance contest, it was time for the selection of the evening’s King and Queen. You could feel the expectations of the group, hoping to be the ones selected to take this year’s crowns. Special guest, Lieutenant Rene Gonzales, from the City of Naples Sheriff’s Department, selected the winners onstage.

Who were the lucky ones to take the crowns home? This year the King of the Dance was Felipe del Hierro and the Queen, Kristina Albino. After their crowning, they paraded around the hall while their friends cheered, “Hurrah! Hurrah!” Congratulations to the lucky couple!

The Valentine’s Day dinner-dance was possible thanks to the volunteer work of the Naples and Golden Gate High Schools’ Junior Civitan clubs, and Naples High School Advisor Monica Rodriguez. We need to also recognize the exceptional volunteer work of members of the Naples Civitan Club, under the guidance of project chair Micky Dix. Thanks to their amazing teamwork, these volunteers brought this memorable event to these beautiful people.
