Marco Island resident, Steve Zandy, is getting a new bike. After his custom-made, three-wheeled bicycle went missing sometime between Sunday evening of June 17 and early Monday morning, June 18, an outpouring of donations from the community has made it possible to build Steve a new bike.

Upon hearing the news of the stolen bicycle, Karen Nettles of Marco Island, contacted Steve Stefanides of Christmas Island Style and Tiffany Holmuth of Mutual of Omaha Bank. Together, they set up a donation fund where individuals could drop off checks in Steve’s name at Mutual of Omaha Bank. Since that time, over $2,000 has been raised – enough to build Steve a new, custom bike.

As donations poured in, Steve’s bike was located in a dumpster off of Port au Prince Road in Naples. Badly damaged and spray-painted, the bike has been returned, but is not functional.

Matt Walthour, owner of Island Bike Shop on Marco, will be building Steve’s new bike just as he did the previous one. Steve’s recovered bike will be stored and used for replacement parts as needed.

What began as a tragedy has turned to triumph. Thanks to the generosity of Marco Island residents, Steve will soon be pedaling in paradise again.
