The construction business is a family affair for AP Builders Construction Services founder and owner Alex Parker III.
He grew up learning at the feet of his father, who was a premier carpenter in metropolitan Detroit from the 1950s through the 1970s. By the age of 12, Parker began spending summers on rough-carpentry crews. From there, he progressed to finished carpentry at age 18.
When he was 20, Parker built his first home, and with that, a career in custom home building was born.
Those lessons he learned from his father included more than important instruction in the building trades. His father also emphasized “and illustrated well the concept of quality workmanship,” said Parker.
It’s a philosophy that Parker has carried with him throughout his professional life, whether it’s as a general contractor or during his 12 years as a bank vice president, overseeing facility management, site acquisitions and new branch construction.
AP Builders’ motto — “Quality Built Upon Integrity” — reflects the mindset of both personal and professional conduct.
“I firmly believe in that statement and strive daily to fulfill it and to earn my customers trust, one job at atime,” said Parker.
Founded nine years ago, the company handles residential and commercial construction, major and minor repairs, major additions and build-outs, home and condo remodeling and new custom homes — start-to-finish.
AP Builders is also an authorized dealer and installer for Merillat Cabinets.
Parker’s list of projects managed over his career includes:
- Customs Homes from 1,200 square feet to 24,000 square feet;
- A corporate build-out for American Dental Association Headquarters in Bloomfield Hills, MI;
- A 75 year old re-use in the Detroit Historical District converted into an art gallery;
- A thermal storage facility at a state college;
- Kal-Wal Space Frame at Disney’s Contemporary Resort Marina;
- Numerous branch bank facilities;
- $2 million shoe store at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas;
- The start up of a 55,000 cold storage facility for Spice World in Orlando.
“Having spent time on “both sides of the fence” I appreciate the obligation of a builder working with sub-contractors and clients,” he said. “I learned at an early age the importance of good communication and meeting the customer needs and desires within their projected budget.”
Parker says that while people can choose from many qualified and accomplished builders on Marco for their projects, it’s important that they findjust the right fit.
“Every customer needs to have trust and confidence in their builder when entering into a contract. I have always felt that it is equally important to build the relationship as it is to construct a building,” he said.
Parker is a member of the National Association of Home Builders and is a former member of the board of directors of the Collier County Building Industry Association. He is currently on the executive board of the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce.
After a career largely spent “up North,” Parker found that construction in Southwest Florida and Marco, in particular, had some different requirements.
“The biggest learning transition for me is the extensive structural engineering that is required in the construction process as a result of living on a barrier-free island,” he said.
Marco’s appeal as a place for new construction, especially for Northerners, is easily explained in Parker’s eyes.
“Beyond the absence of mud, snow, ice and frozen conditions, it is simply a wonderful paradise environment to be a part of and to work in,” he said. “I love what I do and this is a fabulous place to do it.”
