Each year Howard and Michelle Jordan look for candidates who have selflessly given to the community. Those chosen are then honored during the Talk Derby to Me event, benefitting the Upon a Star Foundation. The fundraising event is held in conjunction with the Kentucky Derby and gives residents a chance to show off their glamorous Derby fashions as well as bid on silent auction items, enjoy mint juleps and fine food, all in true Derby style.
The Upon a Star Foundation is a local non-profit charity which was founded by Howard and Michelle to benefit area children. Since the charity involves children, it is only fitting that one of the awards given goes to a “Super Teacher.” In a search for potential 2012 award recipients to honor at this year’s 6th Annual Talk Derby to Me event, Howard and Michelle heard one name come up frequently, Terese Glasser.
Michelle Jordan described the Super Teacher award, “Upon a Star recognizes a SUPER TEACHER each year. In today’s world, teachers are asked to do so much. They are not recognized enough for their efforts and the pay does not match the responsibilities. Collier County has many, many great teachers. Our past search of Super Teachers has uncovered Mr. Shane Totten, Mr. Tim Coyle, Mr. Jim Ragusa and Mrs. Kim Ragusa.
“We look for a teacher that goes above and beyond, an educator that inspires and challenges. Being a teacher takes discipline, courage and requires sacrifice. Our 2012 SUPER TEACHER combines passion, fairness and the ability to provide an environment in which each student feels a sense of worth and security. We are fortunate that our 2012 SUPER TEACHER has relocated from the Jersey shore to the Marco shore. She has done an exceptional job teaching students for over 13 years. She is the ESE coordinator at Marco Island Charter Middle School. She is vice president of the MICMS PTO and past president of the Marco Island Optimist Club. Terese Glasser is our 2012 SUPER TEACHER of the YEAR!”
Marco Island Charter Middle School Principal George Abounader heard about Terese winning the award and said, “Our school’s slogan is ‘Where Children Learn to Succeed.’ Terese takes that slogan seriously and never gives up on any of her students. Terese discharges her duties with care and professionalism and her students know that she is an advocate for them.”
Thank you, Terese and congratulations!
