Political analyst, journalist, actor, producer, writer and MSNBC news program commentator Lawrence O’Donnell will lend his voice in support of women’s rights on behalf of Planned Parenthood of Collier County at its 11th Annual Choice Affair, to be held at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club on Jan. 30, 2015. The premier fundraising event begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction, followed by dinner and the program at 7 p.m.
On his weeknight show, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell,” the host has devoted an impressive amount of screen time to advocates for women’s reproductive health and has been outspoken in his criticism of those who would limit women’s choices.
A Harvard graduate, O’Donnell won an Emmy as executive producer and writer for the television series “The West Wing.” More recently, he played a role in the HBO series “Big Love.” Before becoming involved in television, O’Donnell was senior advisor to Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan and served as chief of staff to two committees of the U.S. Senate.
As keynote speaker at The Choice Affair, O’Donnell follows such luminaries as Gloria Steinem, Ellen Goodman, Jane Fonda, Kathleen Turner, Anna Quindlen and Ashley Judd. The event supports Planned Parenthood’s spectrum of health, family planning and educational services. For more than 40 years, Planned Parenthood of Collier County has offered medical and prenatal care, birth control, cancer screenings and family planning services – regardless of patients’ ability to pay. Nearly 10,000 men, women and teens are served by the Naples-based organization every year.
The nonprofit agency depends on community generosity. Donations account for 50 percent of its budget, while government funding accounts for just 9 percent (and no government money pays for abortions).
Admission to The Choice Affair ranges from $350 for a single ticket to $15,000 for a premium table for 12, including six seats at the Morning After Brunch with two of those seats at Lawrence O’Donnell’s brunch table. Intermediate ticket levels include such extras as photos with O’Donnell and an invitation to a private thank-you party.
