It first began in the coastal areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, and is rooted in Catholicism. Today, many ports across the United States, and all over the world, take part in the blessing ceremony in order to ensure prosperous seas and safety for their boats and the people on them. Change of Watch – Marco Island Yacht Club


Submitted The Marco Island Yacht Club (MIYC) held its 14th Annual Commodore’s Ball and Change of Watch Saturday, January 23, 2016. Fine yacht clubs throughout the world mark this transition of leadership with pomp and circumstance. This year’s gala event was consistent with that tradition. The Change of Watch ceremony saw outgoing Commodore Dick Irwin have his burgee lowered and Commodore Harris’ new burgee raised. At MIYC, Dick now joins the group of 14 prior Commodores. Submitted The Change of Watch ceremony is held to swear in newly elected officers and trustees and relieve the previous year’s group of command. The 2015 officers for the Marco Bay Yacht Club include Commodore Al Saunders, Vice Commodore Vern Graham and Rear Commodore Bob Boland. Originally organized in 1968 by the Marco Island Development Corporation, the Marco Bay Yacht Club is the oldest Yacht Club on the Island. It holds many boating and social events. The Aventura resident was greeted by the sights and sounds of a colorful aquatic competition, the Marco Island Yacht Club’s Annual Fall Regatta, held Nov. 15-16. Marco Island Yacht Club Annual Fall Regatta


By Coastal Breeze News Staff This weekend — Nov. 15-16 — Marco Island residents will be treated to a colorful sight in the Gulf directly off the Marco Island beaches thanks to the Marco Island Yacht Club’s Annual Fall Regatta. Up to two dozen sailboats, along with their skippers and crews from South Florida, will converge on Marco Island to compete for sailing awards. The Outgoing Commodore, Marcia Orsolini, introduced guests of honor, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 95, Civil Air Patrol, and Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron. The yacht club is the first thing visitors and residents see as they come onto the island over the Jolley Bridge. Submitted The USCG Auxiliary has many responsibilities including boating education, vessel safety checks, environmental protection, but one of the most important is promoting boating safety. So when the Marco Island Yacht Club asked the USCG Auxiliary to conduct a safety patrol for their annual sailing regatta in front of Residence Beach, Flotilla 95 was happy to be of service. The Marco Island Yacht Club’s annual sailing regatta has multiple race-courses and multiple categories of sail boats, including fast multi-hulls and cruisers.
